South Adelaide's Under-16s make it a perfect start in 2021.
After coming off a solid first up win the boys were looking forward to playing their first home game for the year back at Flinders University Stadium.
The opponent was Centrals who had come off a tough first up loss so we knew they were going to be hungry for a win.
The wet conditions were going to make it a hard fought contest but the Panthers were looking forward to the challenge.
We made a strong start and when dangerous forward Jack Delean kicked his 2nd goal inside the first 6 minutes it was a handy early lead.
The midfield was working hard led by skipper Tom Wheaton, while Jace Daris was getting his hands on it also and Nicholas Schroder was holding up well down back.
Centrals managed 1 goal for the quarter and we hit quarter time with a 13 point lead.
The 2nd quarter was played much the same as the first as both sides tried to move the ball forward at all costs.
Wingman Issac Churchill was winning a lot of ball and his long kicking was a feature as he gave our forwards opportunity to score.
Delean continued to look dangerous as did Seb Hoeck who was continuing his good form.
Centrals worked hard to put our defence under pressure, but continued strong work on the last line from Myles Amos and Ryan Pearsons helped to keep their tally to only 2 goals for the quarter.
When big man Sebastion Oliver marked and goaled on the half time siren it was out to a 29-point buffer.
After the break the Dogs came out with real intent and began to put us under pressure but the boys willingness to stay strong in the contest was holding us in good stead.
Blake Rodrigues was having an impact while Wheaton continued to work hard on the inside.
Sid Draper was showing he enjoyed the contest in tight but Centrals strong work was paying off as they began to peg back the margin.
We definitely had our opportunities but some missed shots at goal meant we only managed 3 behinds for the quarter and a late goal to the Dogs gave them some momentum as they headed to the last change within 17 points.
It was going to be an interesting last quarter as both sides knew a goal either way would be decisive.
The Dogs struck early to give themselves real belief but the Panthers stayed composed and a goal to Seb Hoeck steadied the ship.
Once again we failed to take our opportunities to hit the scoreboard and seal the game scoring 7 more behinds for the quarter but it proved to be enough as the boys held on for a hard fought win in what was tough conditions.
The final margin was 21 points.
Delean finished with 23 disposals and 3 goals while Wheaton had 19 touches to compliment a game high 16 tackles.
Pheonix Hargrave and Churchill collected 17 touches each.
We now take on West Adelaide at Hisense Stadium next Sunday morning.
