U16 & U18 Match Report: Round 6 vs Norwood
South Adelaide U16s pounced on Norwood to claim a 91-point win while the U18s fell short by 16 points during their clash at Flinders University Stadium on Saturday.
The Panther Under-16s surged away from the Redlegs during the second half to claim a comprehensive win, 15.21 (111) to 3.2 (20).
As for the Panther Under-18s, they took the fight to the Redlegs but unfortunately, they fell just 3 goals short of snatching a much-needed win, 8.9 (57) to 11.8 (74).
During that match, Jaiden Magor led the way with 27 disposals, 6 clearances, 5 tackles and 3 goals. Fittingly, Magor was the one who got things going for the Panther Under-18s with the opening goal of the day.
However, as would be the case for the majority of the match, the Panthers struggled to string consecutive goals together. This was shown early on as Magor’s opener was met with back-to-back goals by the opposition.
But the blue and white fought back. Angus Bradley (16 disposals, 8 marks, 7 tackles) and Jack Delean (13 disposals, 5 marks, 2 goals) were just some of the Panthers’ strong contributors.
And, facing a 4.2 (26) to 5.4 (34) deficit at halftime, Magor stepped up again with back-to-back goals to hand the Panthers the lead. However, the opposition would record the next 4 majors – which set the Panthers up for the hard-fought 8.9 (57) to 11.8 (74) loss.
The Panther Under-16s enjoyed a patch of dominance during their 91-point thrashing of the Redlegs.
Phoenix Hargrave (30 disposals, 10 marks, 7 clearances) and Joel Cartwright (17 disposals, 6 goals) were among the many standout performers for the Panthers – who finished with 8 goal scorers.
By crunching the numbers, the Panthers’ control over this game becomes more evident as the side won the inside 50 count, 68 to 17. The side also wracked up 36 scoring shots to 5 – albeit they lacked some polish as they finished with a 42 per cent scoring efficiency.
However, despite the end score, the Panthers trailed during the early stages of the first term.
After the Redlegs kicked the opening goal of the game, it took until the tenth-minute mark for South to register their first goal – but it was all the Panthers from there on out.
Following the halftime break, the Panthers surged towards the resounding win by kicking 9 second-half goals while conceding just a single point.
This 15.21 (111) to 3.2 (20) win sees the Panther Under-16s sit equal second on the ladder, just a win below the top spot.
The Panther junior sides will have the weekend off to rest and recover before they then face off against Glenelg at Flinders University Stadium on Saturday, 21 May. The Under-16s will kick things off at 11:00am then the Under-18s will follow from 1:15pm
