SANFLW Medalist Nikki Nield calls time

Dual Margaret Nyland Medallist Nikki Nield has announced her retirement from football following medical advice.

Nield, who played 42 games for South Adelaide, made the difficult decision to step away from the game on medical grounds.

Her SANFLW journey began in 2017 when she debuted for Norwood in the league’s inaugural game, playing a single match for the Redlegs.

In 2018, the Panthers entered the competition, and Nield returned to her zoned club as a proud junior of South Adelaide. That year, she played nine games and was part of the Panthers’ historic premiership over her former team.

Following the 2018 season, Nield was drafted to the Adelaide Crows with pick 8, where she played 21 games and celebrated a premiership win in the AFLW’s Season 6 in 2022. Later that year, Nield made the decision to move to the Fremantle Dockers for Season 7, adding nine more AFLW games to her resume.

Throughout her AFLW career, Nield continued to represent the Panthers during the off-seasons, contributing to their 2019 premiership win over North Adelaide and featuring in the 2020 Grand Final loss.

After returning to South Australia full-time at the end of 2023, Nield had a breakout season in the SANFLW. Averaging 21 disposals per game, she became the first Panther to win the SANFLW League Best and Fairest Medal and capped off a remarkable year with her third SANFLW premiership.

South Adelaide Female Football Manager Jonathon Parker expressed his sadness at seeing Nikki retire but praised her outstanding career.

"It's extremely disappointing for Nikki to end such an incredible career on this note, but her health and safety must always come first." Parker said.

"She had an amazing return to the SANFLW in 2024 and rediscovered her love for the game after exiting the AFLW."

"Nikki is an exceptional person and a Panther through and through. While she won't be on the field, she’ll continue to play a vital role by mentoring the next generation of talented footballers."

"We thank Nikki for everything she has given to our club and wish her and Mac all the best in this next chapter of their lives."

Reflecting on her journey, Nield shared her deep gratitude for the opportunities football has given her.

"The game has been my heart and soul for years, and leaving it behind due to medical reasons is something I never imagined. I'm filled with gratitude for every moment, every challenge, every teammate, and every coach that helped me grow both on and off the field."

"Football is more than just a game to me. It’s being part of a second family, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the chance to finish my career in such a memorable year. The impact this game has had on me will never fade."

"Retiring isn’t easy, but I’m grateful for every moment."

"Coming back to South this year felt like returning home. To finish my career where it all began, in such a special year, with an incredible team, is something I’ll always cherish."

"Thanks for the memories, South. You will always hold a special place in my heart. Forever proud to be a PANF."
