Skipper Bri Cleggett calls time
South Adelaide captain Bri Cleggett has announced her retirement from football, informing the club last week of her decision to step away from the game.
Cleggett, who has captained the Panthers for the past three seasons, played a pivotal role in establishing a strong cultural foundation that has helped propel the team to back-to-back Grand Final appearances, including the 2024 Premiership.
After suffering an ACL injury in 2022 and an ankle injury in the first round of this season against West Adelaide, Cleggett cited her injuries and a desire to focus on her professional career as key reasons for stepping down.
In an emotional address to her teammates on Wednesday night, Cleggett reflected on her time as captain, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to lead.
“Leading this team has been my greatest privilege. I couldn’t be prouder knowing we’ve laid the groundwork for women’s football that will last for generations,” Cleggett said.
“This club has always been more than just a team to me—it’s a part of who I am. Our culture, our legacy, our impact—these are the things I think about every night before I fall asleep.”
"I bleed blue and white, and I am incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together both on and off the field."
Cleggett thanked those who have supported her throughout her journey and is looking forward to watching the next generation of female footballers rise to the challenge.
South Adelaide Female Football Manager Jonathon Parker expressed deep gratitude for Cleggett’s contributions.
“It has been a privilege to work with Bri over the past six seasons,” Parker said.
“She embodies the core values of our program. She is the heart and soul of South Adelaide and exemplifies everything our program stands for.”
“I want to thank Bri for her immense contributions. The past couple of years have been tough, but her grit and resilience only highlight the fearless leader she is.”
