Last quarter blitz sees the Panthers run over West Adelaide
South Adelaide secured a 35-point win against West Adelaide at Magain Stadium, thanks to a six-goal final quarter.
The home side nearly got off to the perfect start after skipper Jesse Nye won the first centre clearance of the afternoon, which eventually resulted in a dangerous forward-50 entry and a rushed behind.
Despite the bright start, it was West Adelaide that scored the first two goals of the match. However, South had opportunities but failed to convert in front of goal.
Kody Shortridge eventually kicked South’s first goal late in the first quarter, following a clever gather and snap on the left around several West Adelaide defenders.
Needing more reward for effort in the second term, South Adelaide didn’t waste time, kicking its first of the quarter with Cain Florence’s soccering effort coming within the first 20 seconds of play.
Kodah Edwards continued to showcase his ability to extract the ball from the contest and drive his team forward, while Harry Wadewitz and Cameron Woods displayed great defensive integrity.
South regained the lead after Patrick Carman outsprinted his opponent, shrugged off a would-be defender, and snapped a composed goal.
The away side responded with the next two goals of the match to regain the lead.
As half-time fast approached, Nye composed himself to convert a captain’s goal and level the scores.
With seconds to go, the ball went through several sets of hands before trickling over the line for a behind, giving South a slender one-point lead at the main break.
The third quarter proved to be a tough contest, with both sides struggling to gain ascendancy. Tom Simpson provided a strong presence, laying firm tackles and winning several clearances.
Hudson Voight’s long-range effort put South ahead once again, but the energy increased following Ben Dittmar’s left-foot snap from 30 metres out to increase the lead to 12 points.
West Adelaide kicked the next major of the game to reduce the margin to one goal, setting up an exciting final quarter.
Holding a slender four-point lead at the beginning of the final term, South once again struck early through a composed set shot from Carman.
Carman proved to be the difference, with his third goal coming after attacking the ball and snapping truly. After converting from the boundary for his fourth, Carman had seemingly sealed the game.
Goals from Florence and Dittmar put the result well beyond doubt. Jack Wigzell impressed once again, winning plenty of the ball and registering 10 marks for the game.
After a six-goal final term and a great overall team performance, South Adelaide secured an impressive 35-point win for the home side.
South Adelaide will take on Central Districts at X Convenience Oval on Saturday, 5 April, at 2:10pm.

South Adelaide come from behind to secure thrilling seven-point win against West Adelaide
South Adelaide came from behind in the final quarter to secure a gutsy seven-point win against West Adelaide at Magain Stadium.
The opening term proved to be a tight tussle, with scoring hard to come by for both sides.
After 20 minutes without a goal, Joel Wigzell showcased his composure on the boundary line to snap truly and give South Adelaide its first lead of the game.
Hudson Boal continued to win the ball around the contest, registering several clearances. He also applied plenty of tackling pressure on West Adelaide’s midfielders.
Entering the second quarter with a slender three-point lead, South was eager to extend its advantage. Zemes Pilot nearly created a goal from nothing after his lunging soccer effort went wide.
West Adelaide regained the lead after three consecutive goals, putting South Adelaide’s backline under immense pressure.
Despite losing momentum, Jayce Potter continued to provide outstanding rebound from the back half through his kicking ability and relentless work rate.
Pilot’s opportunistic finish in the goal square helped South regain momentum late in the term, while his handball to Fergus Vogt resulted in a timely goal to reduce West Adelaide’s lead to one point.
Goals continued to be difficult to come by in the third quarter, with both backlines remaining strong despite plenty of pressure.
Dale Shearer and Sam Walsh were resolute in defence, registering several strong marks and starting forward forays through quality rebound-50s.
