Sam Skinner becomes a Panther!

3 March 2021

The Panthers secure former Lion Sam Skinner for 2021.

The 23-year old will make his way to Flinders University Stadium in 2021.

Measuring in at 198cm, Skinner is listed as a key defender but is also pretty handy up forward which is where he play a majority of his football in 2021.

Being taken at pick 47 of the 2015 NAB AFL Draft from Newborough (Vic)/Gippsland U18, he would go on to play three games for the Lions at AFL level, averaging one goal per game.

Skinner played two games in 2020, but has had an unlucky run with injury during his time at the Lions.

After being selected to make his AFL debut in Round 19, 2016 against Port Adelaide, a scan revealed he had ruptured his ACL for a second time.

It wouldn't be until 12 months later he would make his debut in Round 19, 2017 against the Eagles.

Skinner would make an impact kicking two goals on debut.

Unfortunately, he would again tear his ACL later that season while playing in the NEAFL and missed the rest of the season.

Senior Coach Jarrad Wright is really looking forward to what Skinner will bring to the side in 2021.

"Sam is a strong, athletic and aggressive key position player who can play both ends of the ground."

"Sam will support our front half game by posting up next to Sammy Overall inside 50, compete aerially and take some catches."

"We know Sam is a quality player and will have a huge impact for our brand of footy on field, but I've got to know Sam and Charlotte really well over the past 3/4 months and they are terrific people, both Sam and Charlotte will fit into our PANFS culture and South Adelaide community perfectly."

"Really excited to have them at the club and journey ahead in 2021."

When talking about the decision, Skinner said that he really enjoyed the Southern part of Adelaide.

"My partner and I came down before Christmas and I was able to meet Boof and train with the boys."

"I felt like the club really aligned with my values and we really enjoyed spending time on that side of town."

Skinner is also keen to use his experiences form the past 5 years to help drive standards.

"Having experience from being in the AFL will allow me to drive the standards that Boof and the players have set already."

"Although I'm always learning myself, it'll allow me to teach and help others with their footy."

"On field I'll be aiming to give the team an aggressive target up forward with Sammy Overall
As well as bringing professionalism and leadership"

Skinner is set to relocate to Adelaide over the weekend to begin training with the group next week.

"Charlotte and I are arriving Sunday and are very excited to have a look around Adelaide and get to know the boys more before cracking into the season."

"Outside of footy I really enjoy fishing and getting outdoors, as well as playing guitar"

The South Adelaide Football Club welcomes Sam and his partner Charlotte to the club.
