South Adelaide Reserves suffer a heart-breaking four-point defeat against Norwood at Flinders University Stadium on a sunny Saturday.
Trailing by 14 points at halftime, the Panthers fought back and took the lead during the final term but failed to seal the deal as the Redlegs kicked a late goal to snatch the 8.7 (55) to 9.5 (59) lead.
Ben Sawford was impressive for the Panthers, as was Jack Lewis and Mark Noble.
With a spot in the finals still a mathematical chance, albeit a slight one, the Panthers entered their Round Thirteen clash on a two-game winning streak but despite the momentum, the side struggled to get things going early.
And some late withdrawals for South Adelaide's league side also meant the reserves were thin on league experience, and it showed as the side struggled to score despite enjoying the wind advantage.
However, the Panthers only goal of the opening term was at least kicked in style as Phoenix Spicer was able to outrun his opponent, take several bounces, and dodge around defender before kicking truly.
This goal would come at the twenty-third minute mark, sending South Adelaide into the first break facing a 1.0 (6) to 1.2 (8) deficit.
But this contender for goal of the day was not a sign of things to come, as the visitors opened the scoring during the second term with two goals in quick succession.
The Panthers were able to stem the flow with a goal of their own midway through the term, but by then Norwood had broken away with to a 3.1 (19) to 5.3 (33).
However, South Adelaide were able to bring the victors back within range and took the lead during the dying stages of the final term, before a late Norwood goal all but sealed the narrow defeat.
But the Panthers finals chances were already gone, as North Adelaide's victory over Sturt meant the boys couldn't make a late dash into finals regardless of their Round Thirteen outcome.
The South Adelaide Reserves will look to finish off their season with a clash against North Adelaide at Flinders University Stadium on Sunday September 27, from 11:35am.
