A tale of two halves saw the South Adelaide Reserves suffer a 34-point loss against Sturt at Flinders University Stadium on Friday.

They led by as much as 21 points in the second term, but the Panthers couldn’t keep this form going throughout the remainder of the match which saw them fall to the 9.5 (59) to 14.9 (93) loss.

Harry Spacie (14 disposals, 10 tackles, 3 clearances) was a standout for the Panthers, while Darnell Tucker (14 disposals, 10 tackles) made his presence felt during his return.

Looking for their first win of the season, the Panthers jumped on the visitors early.

Within the opening minutes, Sam Gaden kicked the first goal of the match.

Kim Kantilla, a famous South Adelaide surname on debut, then assisted the next 2 goals as Jake Cresswell and Dylan Browncombined to increase South’s early lead to 19 points.

Some inaccuracy from the visitors allowed the Panthers to enter the first break holding a 3.1 (19) to 1.4 (10) lead.

With the likes of Jacob Collins (18 disposals, 7 clearances) and Oliver Megins (16 hit-outs, 2 goals) causing havoc through the middle—the Panthers further tightened their grip on the lead after quarter time.

Then, after Rhys Mutch and Ben Shillabeer both opened their goal accounts within the opening 3 minutes: the Panthers suddenly sat with a 21-point lead.

However, the visitors would go on to register 4 unanswered goals which were only halted when Kantilla’s clever intercept allowed him to score from close range.

Holding a narrow 6.3 (39) to 5.4 (34) lead at halftime, the third term started with a shootout.

The visitors got things going with back-to-back goals within the first 4 minutes of the third term. Then Megins responded with 2 goals in 2 minutes. But Sturt wouldn’t go away.

Brian Gill kicked his first goal of the game halfway through the third term, to recapture the lead for the Panthers—but unfortunately, this would prove to be the final blue and white goal of the game.

Sturt would run away with the game by booting 6 unanswered goals to end the match. The Panthers, who were held goalless in the final term, fell to a 9.5 (59) to 14.9 (93) loss.

South Adelaide Reserves will look to find their first win of the year when they face off against North Adelaide at Prospect Oval for the second time in 3 weeks. This clash is set for Saturday, 23 April, from 10:30 am.
