Outrun by the Redlegs
After back-to-back wins, the League side were feeling good. With a week off under their belts, the boys were ready to face off against a strong Norwood unit on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.
It was tough going to start for South, as Norwood were putting the boys under the pump early.
Getting forward was a battle as the defence was fierce, the Panthers only managing to do so late.
Around the ground, it was about managing the ball when in possession. These chances were hard to come by as Norwood were keeping the pressure on.
Liam Fitt would secure the only South major of the term, his set shot from 35-metres out on a tight angle was pure.
This would leave the League side down by 21-points headed into the second quarter.
The siege would continue into the second, as the Panthers were unable to do much against the run Norwood had created.
Certain passages around the stoppage were clean which allowed the boys to operate, but it was tough navigating forward.
Only a few minor scores would seep through in their attempts to close this contest.
Down back, the boys were doing all they could to keep the game from getting away from themselves.
After a rough term, the Panthers were headed into the second half down by 51-points.
With the game slipping away from the League side, it was clear that a lot had to be done to tighten the deficit.
In the third quarter, the boys kicked into gear and matched the output of Norwood mostly.
The passages with the ball were clean, especially by hand and the navigation by foot out of a rebounding position was smooth.
Norwood would kick a few to start, then Fitt would find himself on the end of a second major to stop the run.
The backline cleaned it up in the third, as they did well to stop quick run through the forward line. The midfield working back to aid when they were needed.
South would do some damage late, taking the opposition off guard and showing off their skills in the process.
Eamon Wilkinson was classy with his finish. His set shot from just shy of 50-metres in front looked good as soon as it came off the boot.
Damon Freitag would follow this with his set shot from 45-metres out on a slight angle, managing to bend it back though the sticks for his first.
At the end of the quarter, the League side were down by 50-points. A deficit which seemingly would be too much at this point in the game.
In the last quarter, South were running the show through the middle portion of the term.
Especially young gun Phoenix Hargrave who put on a show with his two majors, getting shifty and showing off his class around the sticks.
Corey Grocock would also get on the end of a major during this term, helping the boys get some confidence back.
It was a tough contest, with everyone trying their best against an impressive side, but nonetheless, it wasn’t enough.
The League side will look to finish the season on a good note, starting with their next contest against Woodville-West Torrens on Saturday the 17th at Flinders University Stadium in a 2:10pm timeslot.

After a gutsy win in their last performance, the Reserves were looking to secure their spot in the finals. With a few games left, every win matters. Faced with Norwood after a week off, the boys were looking to get it done.
Kaleel Ross would start the Panther’s game in style. He would peel off the pack and get loose, slotting the first major while on the move.
After this point, it became a battle. With Norwood doing well to create a lead, South did keep possession to start and moved with purpose.
The boys down back were doing all they could to keep it close, but it was a challenge with the sheer number of entries that came in.
By the end of the quarter, the Reserves were down by 23-points.
In the second, the boys tightened up some loose ends and made it more competitive.
Both sides couldn’t manage to kick their first, but the entries into the forward line and exit out of the back line were impressive despite the lack of majors to start.
Blake Rodrigues would break the drought with his first major, while Ross was building on his already impressive start with another major sometime after.
It was a back-and-forth affair as Norwood would equalise and sneak a few after this, making it a challenge headed into the second half.
The Reserves would end the game down by 24-points, but they still had time given the state of this contest being so tight.
In the third term, South continued to compete and keep it close, with the boys down back holding strong.
Out of the middle, the Panthers were competing, making every contest a battle, the defensive pressure really being put on display.
The tussle match was a spectacle to watch, as it was clear the Reserves had what it took to match the play with the best of them.
Angus Bradley slotted his first major during this quarter, while the weapon of the day Ross snuck around for his third goal of the day.
It was still hard to separate, as everyone was holding strong. Down back, it was evident the boys knew it was close.
The term would end with the Reserves down by 29-points, and with time running out, it was going to be tough.
Unfortunately, the boys would struggle in the last and get put away. Bradley would secure the first of the quarter, but this is where it ended for the Reserves.
The legs were getting tired after a hard-fought contest and Norwood were too good to finish.
Cooper Rogers was a standout with his 24 disposals and 9 tackles throughout the middle, doing all he could for the team.
With that, the Panthers would lose by 43-points. Their next contest will be against Woodville-West Torrens on Saturday the 17th at Flinders University Stadium in an 11:30am timeslot.
