The Panthers Claim Third Minor Premiership.
With one game left in the season, the Women’s League side were looking to finish strong against Central District.
It was pivotal that the girls ended on the right note and kept the form in the lead up to finals.
In the first quarter, Lucy Northcott got it started early with her major, a smooth set shot from 20-metres out.
The tone was set and the girls were looking the goods, moving the ball with purpose and locking up on the defensive end.
Although the Panthers would concede a major, it was clear that the league side were dominant in their play.
It would remain close for the rest of the first term, headed into the second up by 3-points it was still anyone’s game to win.
The second quarter had Panther claws all over it, making the transition play look effortless and the pressure around the contest look seamless.
Doreena Hansen would provide the much appreciated major just after the six-minute mark, while Emily Brockhurst would begin to fire away late in the quarter with her first.
It was impressive to see the side play with such purpose knowing that this game was a statement for the post-season.
Nothing got through the tight defences and the girls were in their groove. At the end of the term, they’d be in the lead by 14-points.
The first half set the tone and the level of play for the rest of the day, as the side were unstoppable.
Brockhurst was especially important as she’d make a late push to be the league leading goal scorer of the season. Slotting two majors in remarkable fashion, rewarding the hard work of her teammates.
The backline was again impressive in this quarter as they were locking up any run the opposition had made.
Although the offence was staggered, it was prevalent that the pressure never wavered. Nikki Nield was the catalyst of this working both ways and laying 9 tackles, as well as garnering 19 disposals once it was all said and done.
With one to play and a 28-point lead to boot, it wasn’t looking like the League side were going to lose this one.
Although the Bulldogs started to look more fierce, it was too late. The major for Brockhurst, which made her equal leader in the 2024 goal kickers, putting a dampener on the run.
Jaslynne Smith had to be noted as her enforcing presence was a contributor to the eventual win.
Finishing strong, the Women’s League side would take the W and head into the final’s series on top of the ladder, a massive effort that we can’t wait to see how it eventuates in the coming weeks.
The Panthers will head into the Semi Finals this Saturday the 22nd, taking on Glenelg in a 12:00pm timeslot, followed by Central District v Norwood in a 2:20pm timeslot. Both to be played at Flinders University Stadium.
