A Big Day Out Against the Roosters
It’s rolling into crunch time for the women’s side and after a narrow 1-point victory in Round 11, the girls were looking to keep the form up. Faced against North Adelaide on Sunday afternoon in a milestone game for Morgan Johnston, she’d lace up for her 50th. It was set to be a great contest.
In the first quarter, it was a battle of the defence, with both sides structuring well behind the ball and making sure every contest would be a battle.
The Panthers making the opposition feel every bump and tackle, withering away at them piece by piece.
It would be in the final minutes of the term when Emily Brockhurst would secure the first major of the contest and relieve the pressure.
Leaving the quarter in favour of the Panthers by 5-points.
During the second term, it was a lot of the same as it was pure lockdown on both sides.
The girls did well to break lines early and get the ball into great spots, making it clear the skills were on point and it was going to be the difference in the contest.
One major would arise in the term and who else would it be besides Brockhurst, starting to build towards her eventual big day out.
Nikki Nield was an X factor in the contest all around the ground, her pressure acts resulting in an eventual 11 tackles, as well as her 25 disposals, her work rate was through the roof.
At the end of the half, the league side were in the lead by 12-points, with plenty of time to play, it was still anyone’s game.
The girls would unleash in the second half, putting their opponents in the dust.
Four majors arising in the third quarter, Jordann Hickey would get her first, displaying textbook ability, with Lucy Northcott snagging two in respectable fashion, while Brockhurst hadn’t gotten enough, as her third would arise in this term.
One major would sneak through the rock-solid defence in this term but what impressed the most was the play off half back, relaying everything through here and making sure to attack strong.
It was great to see the side playing with such confidence, a great time of year to find their stride.
With one quarter left and a 34-point lead in hand, it was looking like a win for the Panthers.
And win they did. Piling on another four majors Melissa Anderson, Shae Archbold and Emma Charlton all getting their first and only majors, impacting the game in more ways than one. Then Brockhurst would seal off her massive 17 disposal performance with a fourth major.
It was silky all across the ground, the pressure was up all contest, never wavering from what was working.
The scoreboard was looking very impressive at the end of the contest, the girls walking away with a 51-point win.
With that victory, the Women’s League side will look towards matching up with Glenelg at Flinders University Stadium on Saturday the 8th in a 3:50pm timeslot.
