A Battle of the Blues
It was an interesting start to the contest as South were playing a defensive game to start, making sure to mitigate the attack of the Double Blues.
Sturt were the only side to kick a major in the first through Georgia King.
Nikki Nield was great at keeping the pressure up early, she’d eventually end with a team high of 9 tackles.
At the end of the first, the Panthers were down by 3-points with plenty of time to bounce back.
It was an almost complete shift in the second term, with the girls fighting back and making their presence known.
Battling hard and getting their first major on the board, coming off the boot of Doreena Hansen.
While this was early in the term, the Panthers made sure to put their skills to use and keep the ball moving, making it difficult for Sturt to do anything. Only sneaking through for a minor score.
In this term, Caitlin Couch started to garner the ball in bunches, ending the contest on a team high 27 disposals.
At the end of the second the scores were flipped, and the Panthers were up by 3-points.
It was shaping up to be a tense finish, as both sides were great on the defensive side of the ball.
In the third, however, the Panthers kept chipping away at Sturt. Finally getting a breakthrough just after the halfway mark.
Jorja Hooper did well to advance the football and was rewarded with her major, snapping it from beyond fifty around her body and guiding it through in one of the best goals of the year.
South owned this term as Sturt were unable to score, mitigating their run from the middle and shutting down anything that came into the backline.
The Panthers would end the term in the lead by 11-points but with still one quarter to play.
Melissa Anderson would slot one early and set the momentum for the rest of the game.
With Sturt struggling to kick another major as the pressure was too much for them to handle.
The Panthers made sure to win the stoppage and lock anything in, as well as keep the midfield work clean and efficient.
It would slow up with majors until the last moments of the game when Emma Charlton would put the final touches on the eventual win, kicking her set shot from the top of the square.
With that, the Women’s League side had constructed a hard fought 21-point win. Setting themselves up for their next contest against West Adelaide on Saturday the 25th at Flinders University Stadium in a 11:30am timeslot.
