South Adelaide keeps West Adelaide goalless after quarter-time to record 14-point win
After conceding the first two goals of the match, South Adelaide put the clamps on West Adelaide, keeping them goalless after quarter-time and recording a 14-point win at Hisense Stadium.
West Adelaide started the first quarter brightly, registering the first goal of the game and putting pressure on South Adelaide’s defence.
Despite the slow start, ruck Soriah Moon was prominent in her 50th game, providing quality hit-outs to South Adelaide’s prime movers, as well as winning clearances of her own.
Caitlin Couch and Emma Charlton benefitted greatly from South’s ruck dominance; however, they were unable to convert it into scoring opportunities in the first term.
Emily Brockhurst delivered South Adelaide’s only score for the quarter, a behind.
West Adelaide took a 12-point lead into the first break, giving South plenty to think about.
The away side got off to the best possible start in the second term, with Shae Archbold nailing a set shot from 25 metres out with little angle to speak of.
Following their first major of the afternoon, the momentum quickly started to swing in favour of South Adelaide.
Debutant Abby Woodward became the beneficiary of South’s tenacity and pressure, kicking the easiest of goals after a turnover from a kick-in, giving the away side a one-point lead.
South Adelaide’s ruck dominance continued in the second term, with Taya Maxwell’s long-range effort stretching the away side’s advantage further.
Layla Vizgaudis provided plenty of energy in the midfield, while Melissa Anderson’s tackling pressure forced West Adelaide to rush their disposals.
After a dominant quarter, South Adelaide took a seven-point lead into the main break. However, it was still anyone’s game.
The third term proved to be an arm wrestle, with the defence of both sides standing strong against quality forward entries.
Sam Pratt and Esther Schirmer continued to make life difficult for West Adelaide’s forwards while providing rebound from the back half of the ground.
Brylee Kerrin and Anderson came the closest to kicking the first goal of the third term, but their efforts both resulted in minor scores.
With the game in the balance, Moon proved to be a class above. The ruck’s ability to win crucial clearances and lay strong tackles was inspirational for her side.
After a goalless quarter for both sides, South Adelaide took a slender eight-point lead into the final term.
Charlton and Couch showcased their ball-winning ability early in the final term, finding their teammates by foot and hand.
The clock was fast becoming the enemy for West Adelaide, but so was the scoreboard. Lily Baxter’s pass to Woodward in the goal square resulted in her second of the afternoon.
Despite a gallant effort by the home side to get back into the game, South Adelaide stood up when it mattered most and recorded a valuable away victory in Moon’s milestone game.
After their come-from-behind win, South Adelaide will be eager to carry their momentum into their clash against Central Districts at Magain Stadium on Sunday, 6 April, at 2:00pm.

South Adelaide dominate from start to finish to record a 28-point win against West Adelaide
South Adelaide continued its strong start to the season, recording an emphatic 28-point win against West Adelaide at Hisense Stadium.
The away side got off to a strong start in the first quarter, dominating the territory battle and registering several high-quality forward-50 entries.
Laquoiya Cockatoo-Motlap came close to opening the scoring for the visitors, but she was tackled at the last moment by a desperate defender, denying her the first goal of the game.
Despite this close call, South Adelaide didn’t have to wait long for their first major when Zoe Flesfadar’s quick shot at goal from the stoppage split the middle.
South Adelaide’s midfield continued to get first use, thanks to the ruck craft of Jacinda Schunselaar.
Tenacity was a highlight for South, eventually resulting in the second goal of the match following Tiana Lush’s tackling pressure. Her converted set shot increased the lead to 12 points.
At quarter-time, South Adelaide maintained a two-goal advantage, while also keeping the home side goalless.
The second term started brightly for the away side, registering several inside-50s and putting immense pressure on West Adelaide’s ball carriers.
Cassie Coombe was prominent in the opening minutes, finding Lush inside-50 with a nice pass. While it didn’t result in a score, South’s zone continued to make life difficult for West Adelaide.
South Adelaide kicked the first goal of the quarter after Doreena Hansen showcased her pace and composure to find Laquoiya Cockatoo-Motlap, who ran into an open goal.
Minutes later, her sister Litonya Cockatoo-Motlap registered her first goal of the match, after her long-range set shot sailed through the middle, stretching South’s lead past four goals.
At the main break, South Adelaide held a 25-point lead, leaving the home side with plenty to do in the second half.
West Adelaide were gallant in the third term, kicking the only goal of the quarter and reducing the margin to 18 points.
Despite the frustrating quarter, Melanie Koster continued to shine in the middle, alongside Flesfadar. Both strong ball-winners provided first use to their teammates on the outside.
Needing a massive final quarter to steal an unlikely victory, West Adelaide were unable to produce the quality required to break down a strong South Adelaide side in the opening minutes.
Jaidee-Lee Shortridge had an opportunity to put the game to bed, but her shot on the run from short range skewed off the side of her boot for a behind.
However, moments later, Lush showcased her marking ability in the goal square, pulling in a strong grab that she eventually converted. Her second goal extended South’s lead to 27 points.
Skipper Chloe Meyers marshalled the defence well, resulting in a backline that only conceded one goal for the game.
As the final siren sounded, South Adelaide were never truly troubled throughout the match, and the scoreboard reflected an impressive team effort.
South Adelaide will take on Central Districts at Magain Stadium on Sunday, 6 April, at 12:00 pm.
