It wasn't the start to the season we were looking for on Easter Thursday night at home against Glenelg.
The opposition jumped out of the block with a full head of steam and we were unable to match it with them in the first quarter. They had 3 goals on the board before the clock ticked over ten minutes. Quarter time couldn't come quick enough. For both players and coaches.
Some adjustments to the stop play set ups after quarter time at least allowed us to win some more of the footy, however we were not able to transition the ball from the back half into dangerous areas in our forward 50 often enough to give us scoring opportunities. A combination of our poor skills under pressure as well as some effective defending by Glenelg were the contributing factors here.
The second half we were able to be more competitive in some of the fundamentals of the game, but were unable to hit the score board often enough or slow Glenelg's scoring.
On a very ordinary night we did have one positive in the performance of first gamer Coby Helyar from Dudley United Football Club over on Kangaroo Island. Coby has joined our program this season for the first time after finishing Year 12 and boarding school at Pembroke College last year. Coby played midfield and won our possession count with 27 touches, 8 marks and 10 clearances.
We have at least 8 players who were close to playing round one who will come into serious contention for selection this week. Training this week will be hot that's for sure.
Congratualtions to the U16s who started the season very well with a convicing win.

What a great start to the 2016 season as the U16s kicked off on Easter Thursday night.
The boys opened the first quarter with some terrific ball movement and the transition from defence to the forward half was exceptional. Leading by example across the half back line were Tate Coleman and Jonty Manuel, rebounding everything that came their way.
Up forward Daniel Sladojevic was marking everything and was a very dangerous target.
The second Quarter we lost our way a little with our decision making and turnovers proved costly. We went to the half time break with a 3 goal lead, but still needed to make some slight changes.
To the players credit they responded in fantastic fashion and dominated the second half, keeping Glenelg to just 1 point.
On a sour note Key defender Henry Kerrison suffered a knee injury in which could see him miss the remainder of the season.
We as coaches were very happy with the players Team First attitude and willingness to compete.
We are now looking forward to turning our focus to our round 2 clash against Sturt.
