From the President & CEO: Gather Round

7 April 2025

The AFL Gather Round arrives in Adelaide this week, but unfortunately, Magain Stadium and the southern community have been overlooked in the festivities.

South Adelaide will be the only SANFL Club excluded from hosting an AFL training session or player clinic. Initially, Geelong were set to train at our venue but opted for an alternative location.

In previous years, we proudly hosted the Gold Coast for a training session and player clinic, with five Essendon players joining in. In 2023, the Western Bulldogs not only trained here but also returned for a clinic. However, this year, we’ve been left out entirely.

In contrast, some SANFL Clubs host up to five or six AFL teams annually, reaping the benefits of training sessions and junior clinics that create invaluable experiences for their communities.

We believe there’s significant potential for both the AFL and the State Government to include Magain Stadium in future Gather Rounds, akin to their commitment to the Barossa Valley.

To this end, we’ve written to Premier Peter Malinauskas to advocate for our inclusion.

With suitable investment Magain Stadium could become a pivotal gateway to McLaren Vale and the Fleurieu Peninsula, fostering community enrichment and regional growth. Hosting a Gather Round event here would generate profound ripple effects—not just for AFL fans but for the entire region. From increased economic activity to strengthened social bonds and cultural pride, the benefits would be transformative.

Our Masterplan outlines the need for a $16.25 million investment in new player facilities to meet the demands of our existing programs and the potential inclusion of an AFL Gather Round game. An additional $8.2 million is required for precinct upgrades, including 1000 lux lighting and enhanced spectator amenities.

Yesterday’s election commitment from Federal Member for Kingston Amanda Rishworth, pledging $5 million toward female-friendly changerooms and enhanced player training facilities, represents a significant boost for this project, contingent upon her party retaining Government.

The remarkable developments achieved in Lyndoch demonstrate how swiftly a vision can be realized.

We firmly believe the South deserves this opportunity to shine.
