League side goes down in the heat.
After a tough opening to the 2024 campaign, losing to West Adelaide after the siren in round one, the league side were looking to bounce back against Norwood and get back into the winner’s column.
Faced with a fierce 34 degree start at 9am in the first home game of the season the girls were up early ready to bring the fire.
In the first term the Panthers were rolling. Putting the skills on full display and whipping the ball around with ease around the Norwood defenders.
Sometime would pass before the league side would get their first major.Emily Brockhurst would follow up after a contest at the top of the square, dribbling through the footy and giving a much-needed score.
A series of minor scores would seal the term and the contest was firmly in South’s Hands.
This shifted in the second quarter as Norwood kicked into gear, suppling two majors through Hiscock and Syme.
The home side only managing to provide one of their own late in the term.
Brooke Boileau was doing it all once again during this term, applying pressure and garnering a bunch of the footy, finishing the game with a solid 12 tackles and 19 touches.
With barely any time left on the clock Laquoiya Cockatoo-Motlap was the scorer.
Laying a ferocious tackle after a contest rewarded her with a shot directly in front from 20 metres out.
The kick was pure, and the half ended with the Panthers in the lead by 2-points.
After an extended half time to combat the heat, the league side came back on and kept the game in tight contention.
Mel Anderson fired early while on the move after an outlet handball left her streaming forward and unloading from 20-metres out.
Norwood would reply well, and it was clear the contest was going down to the wire. Neither side able to separate from each other.
Headed into the final up by 3-points it would unfortunately all unravel in the last.
The opposition would run away with it supplying three majors while the panthers were unable to score.
Heat getting to the girls and unfortunately going down again leaving the season at 0-2. However, Nikki Nield was strong doing all she could with a team high 21 disposals and 6 marks.
The Development League game will be rescheduled due to the heat, likely in the Gather Round bye.
The Girls remain at Flinders University Stadium next Saturday night to face the old foe in North Adelaide in what is a crucial game for the Panthers to kick-start their season.
The action kicks off with the Development League at 3:50pm, followed by the League side at 5:50pm capping off a big day of Panthers footy with the boys League (1:10pm) and Reserve (10:30am) games earlier in the day.
