Few players have achieved as much in a South Adelaide guernsey as Shane Butler. A former captain and recipient of the 1980 Knuckey Cup, Butler’s contributions to the club are legendary.

Over a remarkable 12-season career, Butler played 285 games, ranking second on the club's all-time list behind Stuart Palmer. His dedication and impact on the team were widely recognized.

A fierce competitor from North Gambier, Butler was equally effective across the centreline and half-forward flank. He arrived at South Adelaide in 1977 and went on to play in four premierships—1978, 1979, 1984, and 1986.

Despite his outstanding career, Butler remains one of the best South Australian footballers never to have been selected for state representation.
