Alfred 'Shaver' Marlow was widely regarded as one of the standout players of the 1890s.

A tough, hard-nosed competitor, Marlow was known for his ability to kick with both feet and was a reliable presence across the half-back flank.

The 1892 South Adelaide team, famous for its rough play, featured Marlow as the only player who didn’t concede a free kick during the season.

Marlow had a breakout year in 1895, and it's often speculated that if the Magarey Medal had been introduced three years earlier, he may have claimed the prestigious award.

After a remarkable 15-year career, which included six premierships and three state appearances for South Australia, Marlow retired from playing. He remained closely involved with the club, serving on the South Adelaide committee for two terms—from 1905 to 1909 and again from 1913 to 1919 (with no competition held between 1914 and 1918 due to World War I).
