Glenelg outrun the Panthers

Out the gate it was looking like an intense matchup, nothing coming easy for either side.

It would take five minutes until Eamon Wilkinson kicked the first major of the day.

After a blunder in the middle the Panthers were out and streaming forward, making sure Wilkinson had his space to operate and kick his goal from 35-metres out while on the move.

Slowing up after this action, Glenelg had plenty of it up forward, not capitalising and starting off inaccurate.

The league side worked well and used the switch effectively to start this game, eventually leading to back-to-back goals from Liam Fitt and Noah Howes.

Fitt turned on the jets after the ball came out quick from the back half, getting on the end of a clever kick, having a bounce, and launching from beyond 50-metres out while on the run.

Howes making sure to convert on his set shot on a tight angle from 40-metres out.

Glenelg would fire back and bring the Panther lead back to only 7-points at the end of the first.

During the second it was looking like anyone’s game, Glenelg outscoring the league side, despite this the Panthers had plenty of the ball.

The majors for the squad would come late in the quarter as a large portion of the term was had pressuring Glenelg, a task the boys did quite well.

Wilkinson secured his second major in a desperate time of the quarter, bringing the game back to a draw after the kick around his body was clean from 25-metres out after getting his hands on a contested ball.

Quickly after Howes was back and kicking his second in spectacular fashion, tucked along the boundary line, running away from the goals he’d turn back, have a shot around his body and kick a blinder.

With time running low the opposition would reply and leave the contest at a deficit of 1-point.

One more half to play the Panthers were looking to hunt and finish strong.

During the third it was locked in a tug-of-war the only major coming from Glenelg, both sides were hard at it in terms of pressure acts.

The Panthers hitting it hard the squad ending on a respectable 49 tackles for the day.

Glenelg would fire away with three unanswered goals to start the last, before Howes was able to supply the only South Adelaide major of the quarter.

Coming off a clean set shot from 25-metres out.

It didn’t stop there for the Panthers as the Tigers were able to kick another before a series of minor scores would end the game.

Oliver Davis was looking great all game and in the fourth was key in getting the ball into opportunistic spots. His 28 disposals and 5 tackles helping the boys.

The next chance for the Panthers will come against Woodville-West Torrens on Saturday the 11th at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval in a 2:10pm timeslot.

The Reserves got their first win of the season in round 4 against West Adelaide, the only thing better than that was to keep the form rolling into round 5 against Glenelg.

Blake Rodrigues and Darnell Tucker were crucial in getting the squad back into the game before it got away.

Leaving the team down by only 8-points headed into the second.

Off the back of the late effort the Reserves started to put in the work, supplying four majors during the second.

It all came off the back of strong pressure around the ground, making sure every contest was a battle for the opposition.

Scott Bedford got it started with a smooth goal early, while Glenelg would follow swiftly the panthers had their claws all over this term.

Bailey Pilmore and Chester Forster both kicked their first in the middle portions of the term and it was welcomed with open arms.

Everyone playing their roll to a high level, Tucker doing well to slot his second major during the surge.

Glenelg couldn’t keep up during the second and the Panthers would end the half up by 12-points, still plenty of time for a change.

It was close in the third term as both sides did well to get around the ground with pace.

Corey Grocock started his barrage with his first major right after a clean clearance at the start of the quarter. Kicking another later in the quarter a major which shifted the contest in the right direction.

Glenelg would follow and so would the panthers, a theme which was seen all throughout the term. Hayden Kernahan doing well to stay strong up forward and finish his hard work.

It was looking like the fourth quarter was going to be one for the history books. With only 6-points separating the Panthers from a loss.

The Tigers kicked one early providing a scare to the squad, it was going to come down to the team who worked harder, the Reserves were up to the task.

Liam Nye would bring the contest back to a respectable margin and for a while neither side was able to breakaway.

With time winding down and a 6-point margin, Grocock extended that late and made sure the win was secured. Despite the Glenelg attack.

Tom Wheaton was a major component in the win with his 28 disposals looking class all around the ground and in the air with his strong hands.

It’s looking like a turning point for the Reserves and their next chance will come against Woodville-West Torrens on Saturday the 11th at Maugham Thiem Kia Oval in a 11:30am timeslot.
